Indoor Exhibits | Division of Earth and Planetary Sciences
Gaia Festival
Sun. 11/22 – Mon. 11/23
What is Gaia Festival?
Gaia Festival is a science outreach event organized by students from the Division of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University.
Through hands-on experiments, interactive activities, and exhibits, we explore the wonders of our planet and share the excitement of Earth and planetary sciences!
Whether you're a science enthusiast or simply curious about the Earth, everyone is welcome!
Exhibits (Tentative)
Meteorology: "Exploring Flows on Earth"
From tornadoes to cirrus clouds, explore the fascinating patterns of fluid motion in the Earth's atmosphere through a tornado simulator and numerical simulations.
Oceanography: "Double-Diffusive Convection"
Watch salt fingers form in a fascinating experiment demonstrating double-diffusive convection, where finger-like structures develop and extend vertically, resembling clusters of enoki mushrooms.
Oceanography: "Global Ocean Circulation"
Explore the large-scale circulation of the world's oceans, driven in part by the cooling and sinking of seawater in polar regions, through a laboratory experiment.
Geodesy: "Faults"
You've probably heard the word "fault" in the news, but do you know what it actually means? Discover how geological faults form through hands-on experiments!
Thermodynamics: "Caldera Formation
A caldera is a large depression formed by volcanic activity. Using familiar everyday materials, we'll demonstrate how these impressive geological features form.
Electromagnetism: "Exploring Electromagnetic Phenomena with a Digital Globe"
Discover Earth's dynamic electromagnetic phenomena, such as the geomagnetic field and auroras, using Dagik Earth, an interactive digital globe!
