Indoor Exhibits | SHIRORU
Palestine Photo Exhibition
Fri. 11/20 – Mon. 11/23
This exhibition is organized by SHIRORU, a student group, and features photographs provided by Makluba, a project that connects people with Palestine through photography.
Taken by people who visited Palestine for various reasons from the early 2000s to recent years, these photographs capture everyday life and encounters with local people.
They show colorful food, houses with earthen walls, bustling street corners, and families sharing a meal. Some photographs may even show scenes that no longer exist today. Through the eyes of those behind the camera, we catch a glimpse of people’s lives and the beauty of their everyday moments.
Palestine may sometimes feel far removed from our daily lives. Yet we live in the same world, in the same era, and are connected in ways we may not always realize. Beyond our smartphone screens and behind the news headlines, people in Palestine are living their lives.
As we looked at these photographs together, our members had many conversations. We talked about what the images show, the stories behind them, and Palestine itself. We are still beginners, with much left to learn. Rather than simply presenting facts or telling visitors what to think, we hope to share what we have learned, the questions we have encountered, and the thoughts that have emerged along the way.
How should we engage with Palestine? We may not find easy answers, but we hope to think about this together with you.

SHIRORU
SHIRORU is a student group built around two meanings of “shirouto”: being an amateur and striving to learn about social issues. Although we are neither experts nor directly affected parties, we live in the same society and cannot remain unrelated to the issues around us. We aim to expand the circle of people who are willing to learn and engage with these issues together.
We organize events and study sessions on various social issues, with a particular focus on Palestine.
Our group consists of around 20 undergraduate students, mainly from universities in and around Kyoto, including Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University, and Kansai University.
