Unusual defensive system in snakes
Yamakagashi, a common snake in Japan, possesses defensive toxins under the dorsal skin of the neck region, as well as usual venoms injected by biting. The former toxins are not produced by the snake but are sequestered from toads consumed as food. In my talk I will introduce peculiar physical, morphological, and behavioral traits that are associated with the re-utilization of prey toxins for defense.
